Competition Preview

The US International Classic is an annual competition taking place in Salt Lake City, Utah, and it is the third competition of the Challenger Series. Due to its location, it can be a tricky competition for some when it comes to high altitude conditions. Here is an outline of notable skaters taking part in the competition. You can find the full list of entries above.

Pairs

The promising young team Ekaterina Alexandrovskaya/Harley Windsor (AUS) will ready themselves for their first Senior Grand Prix series, after winning the Junior Grand Prix Final and the Junior World Championships in 2017. Another young pair preparing for their first Senior Grand Prix is the US Junior National champions Audrey Lu/Misha Mitrofanov (USA), who will be interesting to watch as they start their Senior careers. Ashley Cain/Timothy Leduc (USA) have the benefit of experience entering this competition, which makes them the most likely to take first place here.

Men

US National bronze medalist Vincent Zhou (USA) will be hoping for a strong start to the season after finishing 6th at the 2018 World Championships. This will be his first time appearing at US Classic. Nam Nguyen (CAN) will be close competition for Vincent, after coming first at GTSA Summer Skate with a total of 261.11. We hope to see him develop some momentum here for the Grand Prix series ahead. While the Czech Republic's representative Michal Březina (CZE) may not have the technical clout of some younger skaters, he is an experienced competitor who consistently finishes in the top 20 in international competition - meaning he has a good chance to make the podium here. Yaroslav Paniot (UKR) set his previous personal best at the 2017 US Classic, which he will hopefully match or improve upon this year.

Ice Dance

US National champions Madison Hubbell/Zachary Donohue are the clear favorites to win. Their Rhythm Dance can be expected to sizzle due to their brilliant chemistry on the ice and their recent silver medal at the World Championships should give them confidence facing the new season. Misato Komatsubara/Tim Koleto (JPN) will be building from their great start at Asian Open Trophy and warming up for their first Grand Prix season with two assignments. Keep an eye out for their stunning curve and rotational lifts in their Free Dance! Christina Carreira/Anthony Ponomarenko (USA) are now moving up to Senior level competitions after winning silver at the Junior World Championships last season. This will be the team’s first Senior international competition, so we hope it’ll be a great one!

Ladies

Four-time Japanese National champion and World bronze medalist Satoko Miyahara (JPN) will be debuting her brand new programs at this event. She returned from injury last season with good performances on the Grand Prix circuit. With strong showings at Four Continents, the Olympics, and Worlds, she’s likely going to be the one to beat here. Gabrielle Daleman (CAN) is fresh from a win at GTSA Summer Skate, with a total score of 187.80. She may be close competition for Satoko if she enters the competition confident. Eunsoo Lim (KOR) is making her Senior debut this season and has already shown a lot of potential, having beat Yuna Shiraiwa of Japan by over 10 points at Asian Open Trophy. Now coached by Rafael Arutyunyan, it will certainly be interesting to see how she will progress. Yi Christy Leung (HKG) may still compete mainly on the Junior level, but her strong 4th place finishes at both Asian Open Trophy and JGP Bratislava make her definitely one to watch out for here.

We look forward to an exciting competition this weekend and wish all skaters the best of luck!

Competition Preview

The Lombardia Trophy is an annual competition taking place in Bergamo, Italy, and it has been part of the ISU Challenger Series for the past three seasons. Here is an outline of notable skaters taking part in the competition. You can find the full list of entries above.

Pairs

Last year’s gold medalists Natalia Zabiiako/Alexander Enbert (RUS) will try to defend their gold. They are the reigning European bronze medalists and Olympic team silver medalists. Nicole Della Monica/Matteo Guarise (ITA), who were 5th at Worlds, will literally be on home ice, as they train in Bergamo. We also have Aleksandra Boikova/Dmitrii Kozlovskii (RUS), the 2017 World Junior silver medalists who are competing in their second Senior season.

Men

Last year’s gold medalist Shoma Uno (JPN) is hoping to repeat his victory. Shoma achieved his personal best score at this competition last year so it could be a lucky charm! His countryman Kazuki Tomono had an exciting Senior debut last season that ended with a 5th place finish at Worlds, so we’re interested to see how this season will treat him. Matteo Rizzo (ITA) will compete here for the second year in a row and in front of a home crowd. He is fully transitioning from Juniors to Seniors after competing in both last season, leading to a bronze medal at the Junior World Championships and a 17th place finish at the Senior equivalent. Dmitri Aliev (RUS), silver medalist at the European Championships last season, is also one to watch out for with his quad Lutz.

Ice Dance

Reigning Lombardia Trophy gold medalists Charlene Guignard/Marco Fabbri (ITA) will try again for gold. Rachel Parsons/Michael Parsons (USA) already jump started their season by competing both at Lake Placid and at Asian Open Trophy, winning silver at both, and hoping to get their first Senior gold medal here. We also have Sara Hurtado/Kirill Khaliavin (ESP). Sara was the first ice dancer to represent Spain at the Olympics, which she did with her old partner in 2014.

We look forward to an exciting competition this weekend, and with the world records having been reset ahead of the season we’re likely to see some brand new ones too!

Ladies

We'll see Elizaveta Tuktamysheva (RUS), the 2015 World champion most well known for her stunning triple Axel. She is hoping to bounce back after a disappointing 2017-2018 season where she finished 7th at Russian Nationals and didn’t make the Olympic or World teams. Kaori Sakamoto (JPN), who made her Senior debut last season and became the reigning Four Continents champion will be competing. Mako Yamashita (JPN) is making her Senior debut this season as the reigning World Junior bronze medalist. She has already started her season, placing third at Asian Open Trophy. We will also see crowd favorite Ivett Tóth (HUN), known for her upbeat and unconventional music choices, with her new Bruno Mars Short Program.
